Benefits to Living on Campus as a Graduate Student

Living in graduate housing at Rutgers includes the ease of moving into a shared furnished apartment within established communities of other Rutgers students. Graduate housing locations are close to many university facilities and have designated Residence Life staff support as well as 24-hour crisis response coverage.

Residents in graduate housing enjoy easy access to the free Rutgers bus system and,in many instances, on-campus housing may be the most affordable and convenient option as rent covers all utilities, including electricity, garbage, sewer, hot and cold water, heat, cable television, air-cooling (in buildings that are air cooling equipped) and high-speed internet.

Eligibility for Graduate Housing

To be eligible for graduate housing, students must be:

  • Registered as a full-time matriculated student in a Rutgers academic program.
    • Research credits as student status is limited to doctoral candidates specifically working the equivalent of full-time on their degree requirements. Ph.D. students must be registered for a minimum of 1 credit.

*Post-doctoral appointments, part-time students, and those on practical training and students who register as matriculation continued are not eligible for University Housing. Students are permitted to live in graduate housing for a maximum of five (5) years.

What Our Residents Are Saying

I’ve really enjoyed being in graduate housing. You can tell when you are on a graduate floor, just by the rhythm, people seem busier and quieter. It’s definitely a calmer space, because there is more required of graduate students. I feel motivated because I could see other students studying and working all the time towards their goals. It made me less prone to procrastinate because we are all going through the same thing, and it pushes you to keep working. There are programs and events available and tailored to graduate students on topics about careers, resumes, and professional skills, because graduate students already know the basics. You get a real feel for the community.” Mohamed Tarakji
